A FOOD ADVENTURE!

November has arrived, and with it, World Vegan Month. Don’t roll your eyes yet—I promise it’s not another lecture on kale smoothies! It’s a chance to pause and think about the food on our plates and why it matters. Plants are incredible. They grow from the smallest seed, soaking up sunlight and rain, and in return, they offer us food, oxygen, and even beauty. It’s like a secret bargain with the earth. And the more we eat plants, the more we help protect the world around us. The soil stays rich, the air stays clean, and more animals get to roam freely.

Every meal we choose is a chance to make the world a better place. By eating more plants, we’re using fewer resources—less water, less land, and less energy. And it’s not just about what’s good for the planet—it’s good for us too. Plants keep us healthy, plus they come in a rainbow of colours, textures, and flavours. It’s like opening a box of crayons and finding endless possibilities.

This month, why not challenge yourself to fill your plate with the full spectrum of colours? Red peppers, orange carrots, yellow corn, green spinach, blueberries, and purple cabbage—each colour comes with its own unique power to keep you feeling your best. Every time you add another shade to your plate, you’re doing something kind for your body and for the earth. Cooking is an adventure, too. Try something new—maybe a veggie stir-fry, or a hearty bean burrito, or even a smoothie bowl bursting with fruits and seeds. You might surprise yourself with how delicious plants can be.

And while you’re at it, think about where your food comes from. Every apple or carrot starts with a seed. Some foods travel across the world to get to us, while others are grown just down the road. Understanding where our food comes from helps us appreciate it more, and reminds us that every bite we take is part of a bigger picture. That’s how small actions can make big changes.

If you’re looking to discover even more about the power of plants, here are a few books that might spark your curiosity.

The Omnivore’s Dilemma (Young Readers Edition) by Michael Pollan. It’s a brilliant look at where our food really comes from.

How to Eat a Rainbow by Ellie Bedford shows how eating plants can be a beautiful, colourful adventure.

The True Adventures of Esther the Wonder Pig by Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter tells the heartwarming story of a pig who helped her family make the change to a plant-based life. (Good for younger readers 4-8, but the whole family will love this!)

So, as you journey through World Vegan Month, remember that every meal is a chance to make a difference. Each time you choose plants, you’re not just filling your stomach—you’re helping the planet, supporting animals, and becoming part of something much bigger. Your choices, however small they may seem, are powerful. Every plant-powered bite is a step toward a kinder, healthier world.

Here’s to your next adventure in food!

Bon appetit!
